Packaging as a catalyst for circular change

Packaging is one of the most visible areas where the bio-based transition can meet everyday life. TERRIFIC focuses on reforming the packaging sector with bio-based solutions that enhance performance, circularity and resource efficiency across the entire value chain.

The initiative will demonstrate a first-of-its-kind multipurpose biorefinery to produce bio-based materials from sustainable, EU-sourced feedstocks. These building blocks will be used to produce biopolyesters and biomaterials designed for packaging needs, including thermal and barrier properties, durability and technical performance.

TERRIFIC will develop and validate eight flagship packaging products across the value chain. The solutions include bio-based and biodegradable films laminated on pulp or paper, as well as rigid and flexible thermoplastic biomaterials, with the ambition to reach more than 95% renewable resource content.

Circularity beyond the first use

The initiative looks beyond product development by considering different end-of-life scenarios and secondary value chains based on recycled biopolymer materials for non-food packaging solutions. Its circularity work includes validation of routes such as reuse, remanufacturing, mechanical and chemical recycling, repulping and organic recycling.

TERRIFIC also aims to demonstrate the sustainability, circularity and safety of the developed bio-based materials compared with existing fossil or bio-based benchmarks. The project integrates environmental, economic and social assessment into the design and development of the flagship packaging solutions and the wider value chain.

Why it matters for a stronger bioeconomy

TERRIFIC shows how bio-based packaging can move from individual material innovation to a more integrated industrial model. By connecting biorefinery production, high-performance biomaterials, end-user validation and multiple circularity routes, the initiative strengthens the case for packaging solutions that are not only bio-based, but also scalable, replicable and ready to support Europe’s transition to a more circular bioeconomy.
