ECOFUNC was born from a shared European vision, where 17 partners across research, production, business, and communication joined forces under the coordination of Finish VTT – one of Europe’s leading research institutions - to shape a future of sustainable construction with bio-based, circular materials.
At ECOFUNC we set out on a journey to pioneer the next generation of eco-friendly, functional, and circular building materials that will transform the construction, automotive, and furniture industries toward sustainable practices.
To make it happen, ECOFUNC has brought together top-notch European researchers and industry partners around a shared vision: to go beyond existing standards and develop the first European value chain that transforms biomass into a wide range of eco-friendly, circular products tailored for construction, automotive, and furniture applications.
New ECOFUNC materials will be based on biologically derived polymers—polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) that are produced by microorganisms that utilize CO2, helping to reduce carbon emissions and promote a circular economy.
Reflecting Europe’s commitment to sustainable innovation, ECOFUNC is funded by the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE-JU), under the European Union’s Horizon Europe Framework Programme for Research and Innovation.
