Bio-based and circular solutions

To develop bio-based innovations, ECOFUNC will leverage the power of nature! We will utilize carbon-negative polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), crafted by microorganisms that transform carbon emissions (CO₂) through fermentation into natural biopolymers. These eco-friendly materials are fully biodegradable, resistant, versatile, and suitable for a wide range of applications.

Cross applications

ECOFUNC will create strong panels based on PHA for applications such as ventilated façade cladding, ceiling tiles, and internal partition walls. Advanced end-of-life strategies, including chemical and mechanical recycling will be implemented for circular and sustainable lifecycle of building materials.

PHA polymers

At the heart of our activities are polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs)—biologically derived polymers used to create strong, multi-layered panels for use in cladding for ventilated façades, tiles for suspended ceilings, and internal partition walls.

Scaling up and cross-validating

ECOFUNC panels will be scaled up for large-scale manufacturing, rigorously tested in real-world environments to ensure safety and performance, and adapted across industries.

Going beyond

But at ECOFUNC, our ambitions extend beyond that! We will develop advanced mechanical and chemical recycling methods to close the loop and promote a truly circular and sustainable lifecycle for building materials.

European top-notch partners

To make it happen, European consortium of 17 leading research and industry organizations committed to redefine building practices. Funded by the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) under the European Union’s Horizon Europe Framework, ECOFUNC will run from 2025 to 2029 to drive market adoption and mainstream new bio-based materials.
